Claude is thanking Laurie for the oranges and grapefruit that he sent. Claude remarks that such oranges are not available in New Jersey. Claude says that he made a salad from the grapefruit, "...The kind you will remember we used to make down there — grapefruit — tomatoe (sic) and onion, which we put in a mason jar and then into the ice box."
